Lellinias Weyr is no more!!!!
The Western Continent now sits at the bottom of the ocean. The great, terrifying fire balls appeared in the skies and people gathered to watch the spectacle. But they didnt stay in the sky. Pern was soon battling a foe that took no sides, that didnt care about the colors of dragon hide or the people that rode them. Riders, Holders, Dragons, they all died beside each other. Telgar was destroyed, the Western Continent was soon a ragged ruin, flooded by the turbulent oceans.
Pern was consumed by the disaster and terror filled the people; used to death falling in the form of thread, seeing these huge balls of fiery death made the people run in panic. They watched as the mighty dragons were killed alongside those they tried to protect. For a sevenday the meteors fell, and when they ceased, the surface of Pern was changed dramatically. Holds were ruined, people wandered the land in stunned disbelief as all they had known was ripped out from under them by the fire balls.
The Weyrs were abandoned, the mighty dragons were almost extinct, of the thousands that had been only a scant handful were left. The Weyrs had to forget the enmity they felt towards each other and for the survival of the dragons and the people, they had to work together. They had to, the Red Star was in the skies, the planet that brought Thread was growing larger every day, and the fear of what would happen was very much in the minds of those who saw it.
Would Pern survive? Could the handful of dragons repopulate the species? And would they have time to find out?
The Western Continent was completely destroyed, Lellinias Weyr, gone. The dragons had escaped extinction, but many had been lost. Luckily Thread didnt fall. The Red Planet grew larger, people grew nervous, fearful, waiting for their old enemy to fall, but it never came, the star was there, hovering above them, always in their sight. Teasing, taunting, threatening but still nothing came.
Not for 7 turns.
Then one afternoon, the silver rain began. And it didnt stop. It fell onto the recovering planet for almost a full day. The dragons, now so few, took heavy losses. They had been training for a Fall that lasted a few hours, not a full day. Many were injured, many stunned by the sheer length of the fall. It seemed the pattern of threadfall had changed. The riders and dragons would have to wait and see, watching the skies. No one had any idea when the next fall would be, or where. They watched and waited. It came five days later, and once more it lasted for a full day. The dragons were soon exhausted, the thread seemed to fall every five days. Heavier, more ferocious than they remembered, devouring everything in its path. The dragons fought, but by the end of the third fall the riders had to make a decision, they needed to have the people together, they could protect one place, but not the spread out holds and farms that scattered the landscape.
So it was decided between the Senior Riders and Lord Holders that all small holdings and farms would be recalled. The Holds were hardly full, the population had not recovered as quickly as hoped. So people were called back to the Holds. They would shelter together for fall and then work the days there was no fall. They hoped the pattern would change, after all, this was the future preservation of a species and many feared another disaster would finish them. Food was in tight supply, illness carried many off. Three Holds remained – High Reaches, Ista & Ruatha. Protected by three Weyrs, New Lellinias Weyr, High Reaches and Ista. Barely 450 dragons survived.
Was this enough to fight their old enemy?
Many feared not, but as with all things, time would tell.
