How it had always been ......
Pern was the sort of place where people knew what their lives would be like. They knew what to expect and how to deal with the situations that arose. The ancient menace, now only talked about in Harper songs was gone, a myth, a terror used to keep naughty children on the straight and narrow. Thread hadn’t been seen in Pernese skies for turns. 1957 turns to be exact.
The Weyrs lay empty. Dragons had long since left. Where they had gone no one knew, and in truth no one really cared. As long as they could continue on with their lives, their ways then what was there to worry about.
The Southern continent had always been a very volatile place. The land was prone to earthquakes and the volcanoes often erupted, filling the air with ash and gases. But people had learnt how to live with that. People knew the warning signs. And they did what they had to keep safe. But things were quiet at the moment. Things seemed settled.
What was that old harper saying: something about the calm before the storm. And that was exactly what it was. Pern seemed happy. But one day, early in the morning before people were really awake the land shook. It didn’t only shake in the south, the scale of the Earthquake rocked the North as well. The old, uninhabited Holds crumbled, people screamed, some were buried under the new design of buildings that collapsed onto them. The weather seemed to change, it grew colder. Snow fell and ice froze ponds and wells. The people faced a winter of hardship. Crops were ruined by the weather, the land was still recovering from the earthquake. And then one morning no one could explain the strange grey sky.
Thread fell.
People hadn’t taken any notice of the red star as it slowly crossed the path of Pern. The screams of People and Livestock echoed around the continent. People had forgotten the terrors of Thread. But soon they remembered, soon they felt the pain and despair of having no hope, of not being able to fight something. Pern was despairing, and there were no dragons to help them.
How it shall be ......
One morning, the people of Fort Hold woke to a sight they never thought they would see. A Wing of 12 dragons blinked from between, circling over the Hold before heading to the Weyr. The people were dumbstruck, until suddenly it dawned on them. The Dragons were back. They made their way to the Weyr, wanting to see if it was really true. When they arrived 11 dragons sat around the bowl, all looking towards the Hatching Grounds. People counted 12 dragons, or rather 11 and the sounds from the hatching ground told them a Queen was clutching. Looking around people saw 2 bronzes, 3 browns, 3 Blues and 3 greens.
People had hope, dragons had returned, and a Queen was clutching! When she had finished the people looked, 18 eggs sat on the sands, and there off to one side sat not one, but two golden eggs. People cheered, there was fresh hope. Hope for the future of Pern.
Shortly after the clutch was laid, a second group of Riders showed up. Soryn and her gold helped Syranna out with getting Riders settled and making sure the Candidates were assigned chores, or punished where appropriate.
The 18 eggs hatched a few months later. The two Gold Eggs hatched two Queens, both bonding to worthy girls. And some new colors hatched in the clutch. Two Garnets, a black, two Starshine, a Grey, a Bisque, a Geranium, and two Grapes. All were healthy and proved to be just as resilient as their bondeds.
And time seemed to speed up. Two Turns passed. The Weyrlings grew and prospered and then graduated to full Riders. A sevenday ago, Syranna and Soryn left with a group of Riders that volunteered to help explore the Southern Continent. They were looking to see if there was anything there that they could use as a possible second Weyr. They have not been heard from since.
And now, the new Riders are looking toward the glowing form of Azaerith. And the next Weyrleader.
And the Future is uncertain ...... For all ......
